A Roman bridge of the 2nd century A.D., placed along the route of the Via Appia Traiana, was found in the Centre of Lama Monachile – Polignano a Mare (BA). It is made with volcanic stone (tufa) partly unshaped and partly squared connected with sand mortar, devoid of decorative elements and inscriptions, built on a single-span arch. Its security conditions, as its state of preservation, are good. The bridge belongs to the ecosystem of the Murgia of the Trulli which, from a geographical point of view, looks like an extensive limestone plateau between the Terra di Bari, the Ionian arch of Taranto, Salento and the Adriatic Sea. However, along the coast, with the exception of the imposing Murgian plateau, the elements of nature are strongly reduced at the expense of agriculture and urbanization.
The territory of the Plane of the Olive Trees is home to the largest concentration of ancient and/or monumental olive trees in the whole of Puglia. The coast is mainly rocky, although large sandy tracts appear; among them, the stretch between the town of Torre Canne and Torre S. Leonardo stand out for conservation status, with dune systems and dune ponds still evident.
It belong to the touristic Coastal Action Group “Sea of the Olive Trees”, together with the Adriatic Coast of “Land of Bari”. It can be reached by car, bike or train. After visiting the bridge, we suggest to visit the following sites (following, wherever possible, guided bike tours): the Bourbon bridge, the historic town centre of Polignano a Mare, the Pino Pascali – Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation, the Blue Flag 2013 beach, and the Abbey of San Vito. In view of the beauty of the landscape and the historical and artistic importance of the surrounding places, new touristic itineraries have been activated in Puglia Open Days-Puglia Art Promotion (guided evening tours from 1 July to 30 September) and the cycling route “Riding the sea and history”.
